Sponsoring Afghan Refugees: Our Newest MLUC Family

Orientation Training For MLUC Volunteers Working With Afghan Refugee Family

On Sunday, January 9, volunteers interested in working with our Afghan family attended a Nationalities Service Center orientation here at MLUC.  This program is required for anyone who will be directly involved with the refugees for tutoring, transportation, meals, shopping, childcare, or any other one-on-one activity. The orientation covers a variety of topics, including cultural sensitivity, Afghan background information, nuts-and-bolts of volunteering and specific ways to help. If you hope to volunteer directly in any area, but couldn’t attend the live presentation, a YouTube recording is now available with supporting materials:

  1. Volunteer Orientation Training for working with Afghan families
  2. Supporting documents (Google Drive directory includes (1) Instructions for completing clearances, (2) Core Services PowerPoint, (3) Community Sponsor Toolkit)

The training explains that in addition to the orientation, volunteers who work with the refugees must submit

  1. Signed confidentiality agreement,
  2. Proof of COVID vaccination,
  3. Background security clearances.

More information is available on these items through team leaders or coordinators Eileen Andrews and Nuala Carpenter.
