Faith in Action
At Main Line Unitarian Church, we transform Unitarian Universalist principles into action. Our congregation actively works for justice, equity, and compassion in our local community and beyond. Through advocacy, direct service, and partnerships, MLUC members champion LGBTQIA+ rights, immigrant justice, homelessness solutions, and environmental protection. We honor the interconnected web of existence and the inherent dignity of all people through these justice initiatives.
Current Social Justice Actions
- Human Needs focuses on meeting immediate, practical needs in our community, including shelter, food access, and basic essentials. Through hands-on service and trusted partnerships, MLUC members support Code Blue shelters, food pantries, and outreach efforts across Montgomery County and beyond. We work with organizations such as Family Promise to help families experiencing homelessness and low-income households move toward stability and independence.
- LGBTQIA+ Rights: Main Line Unitarian Church is a Welcoming Congregation, recognized by the Unitarian Universalist Association. This means we affirm and include people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer at every level of congregational life—in worship, in program, and in social occasions—welcoming them as whole people.
- Immigration Justice: Our moral commitment to a welcoming and compassionate congregation includes advocacy and action across borders both literal and ideological. We are part of the New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia, which has been aiding immigrants since 2007.
- Environmental Justice: MLUC has a strong legacy of environmental education and action, with the first ECO group (Earth Concerns Organization) founded at the church in 1990. The congregation is proud of the Green Sanctuary certification received from the UUA Ministry for Earth in 2003.
- Community Partnerships:Since September 2009, our Offering Outreach program has selected one charitable organization per month to receive half of the money from the collection plate each Sunday. By supporting organizations that address social justice and humanitarian needs at the local, state, national, and international levels, we demonstrate our values as Unitarian Universalists.
