THIS WEEK’S SERVICE: MUSIC SUNDAY

Observatory is an original oratorio premiering at Main Line Unitarian Church, bringing together original music by Music Director David Brown, poetry by Cameron Martin, and astrophotography by Dave Hockenberry.

A collaborative work of unusual breadth, it reaches beyond the walls of the sanctuary—toward stars, deep time, and the questions we ask when we look up.

Spanning seven movements, Observatory sets Cameron Martin’s original poems to music for choir, vocal soloists, and full orchestra — each movement inspired by one of Dave Hockenberry’s deep-space photographs of nebulae, star clusters, and a galaxy millions of light-years from Earth. Brown describes the work as “a sacred work for secular humanists who are into astronomy” — an oratorio that uses the incomprehensible scale of the cosmos to illuminate what is most intimately human: love, loss, wonder, and interconnection.

Music Sunday is an annual tradition at MLUC in which the morning service centers entirely on music. This year’s Music Sunday marks the world premiere of a work years in the making, created entirely within this community.
