by Senior Minister Rev. John Morehouse
July 22 is the Feast Day for Mary Magdalene, whom Jesus called his “most beloved” disciple. Mary Magdalene must have been an impressive figure in Jesus’ short ministry to have survived thousands of years of patriarchy, including a false narrative that Mary Magdalene was a repentant prostitute.
As with all women in the Bible, there is more to her story than tradition has told us. In this Sunday’s sermon, I will be exploring the character of Mary in the historical context of first-century Palestine. While there were a number of Marys surrounding Jesus in the Gospels, only Mary Magdalene commanded the respect of the other disciples to the extent that her story survived.
I hope you will join us. After this coming Sunday, I will be away for the month of July on study leave and vacation. If you are in need of pastoral care, please contact our Congregational Care Coordinator Yvette McDonnell. You can also still contact me through here.
