Position Summary

The Social Justice Director will provide strategic and relational leadership to align and build the congregation’s justice priorities, ministries, and partnerships so that justice is the shared, lived practice of our faith at the heart of congregational life. In close collaboration with the Board, minister, staff, and partners, this position will deepen the integration of justice throughout our worship, learning, caring and public advocacy. This position will help build strong and accountable relationships with impacted communities, and create meaningful pathways for members to engage at different levels.

Key Responsibilities

Vision and Strategy

  • Collaborate with the minister, staff, and lay leaders to develop shared plans for the congregation’s justice ministries that align with our mission and grow our understanding of justice work.
  • Facilitate congregational discernment of justice priorities that build on strong community partnerships, respond to real community needs, and make good use of the congregation’s current capacity and potential.

Program Coordination and Support

  • Partner with existing justice teams through on-the-ground involvement, communication and logistical support as they engage congregational participation in justice events, vigils, marches, service projects, and other community-based activities.
  • Nurture and support the launch and growth of new justice teams, collaborating with staff to integrate justice into the life of the congregation.
  • Identify and nurture new lay leaders for justice ministries, inviting people into meaningful roles and providing support as they grow in leadership.

Partnerships & Public Witness

  • Build and sustain relationships with community partners, groups, and neighboring congregations engaged in aligned justice work.
  • Collaborate with ministers and lay leaders to plan and support new public witness, advocacy campaigns, and service opportunities.
  • Help the congregation connect local efforts with broader movements for justice.
  • Strengthen cross‑congregational collaboration on justice education, public voice, and legislative advocacy in order to build a visible, cohesive UU justice presence in the region and beyond.
  • Serve as a consistent liaison with key community partners.

Communication and Administration

  • Develop clear, accessible communications that inform and facilitate engagement – helping make our congregation a safe, trusted home base for social justice action with others who share our values.
  • Track and share information about justice events, partnerships, and participation, and use it to guide congregational reflection, celebration, and learning about our efforts.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to Unitarian Universalist values or to another closely aligned liberal religious and justice‑focused faith tradition.
  • Lived and professional commitment to anti‑oppression and anti‑racism, with a deep awareness of how race, gender, class, sexuality, and other identities intersect in people’s lives.
  • Several years of experience in social justice leadership, advocacy, or community organizing, including work in partnership with impacted communities.
  • Experience working in a faith or multi-faith setting.
  • Collaborative, flexible leader with experience building teams of volunteers and moving projects forward.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships across differences.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (such as social work, community organizing, public policy, religious studies) or equivalent combination of education, training, and lived volunteer experience.
