Play is how humans learn, fundamentally. You may have noticed that I am eager to invite you (everyone in the congregation) to bring playfulness into many things that we do together. That’s because I know you will learn things that way I can’t teach you nearly as well any other way.

So, every year we play together on Christmas Eve. The no-rehearsal nativity pageant is one big let’s-pretend. You are invited to join in. How?

You can sign up ahead of time here to help set up luminaria, set up costumes, be a stagehand, or clean up afterwards. Older kids (10+) are invited to choose one of a few roles with a single line read out at the appropriate moment. Someone needs to be the Star that appears.

You can also decide on the day of. Pick a costume out when you arrive. Step out at the appropriate point in the story to put on an angel’s robes because we always need more of them to pop up as the heavenly host. And sing the carols even if you don’t remember all the words (they’re up on the screen anyway).

And what will you learn? Well, that’s up to you. But I hope it will be that joy is important, no matter what. That there is always hope, no matter what. That love is at the center.

See you then!
