SUMMARY:Sunday Service: Music Sunday
DESCRIPTION:THIS WEEK’S SERVICE: MUSIC SUNDAY \n\n\n\nObservatory is an original oratorio premiering at Main Line Unitarian Church\, bringing together original music by Music Director David Brown\, poetry by Cameron Martin\, and astrophotography by Dave Hockenberry. \n\n\n\nA collaborative work of unusual breadth\, it reaches beyond the walls of the sanctuary—toward stars\, deep time\, and the questions we ask when we look up. \n\n\n\nSpanning seven movements\, Observatory sets Cameron Martin’s original poems to music for choir\, vocal soloists\, and full orchestra — each movement inspired by one of Dave Hockenberry’s deep-space photographs of nebulae\, star clusters\, and a galaxy millions of light-years from Earth. Brown describes the work as “a sacred work for secular humanists who are into astronomy” — an oratorio that uses the incomprehensible scale of the cosmos to illuminate what is most intimately human: love\, loss\, wonder\, and interconnection. \n\n\n\nMusic Sunday is an annual tradition at MLUC in which the morning service centers entirely on music. This year’s Music Sunday marks the world premiere of a work years in the making\, created entirely within this community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE SERVICE \n\n\n\nWeekly Sunday services are at 10 a.m. \n\n\n\nA typical service will last about 60 minutes. Join us in-person or virtually on YouTube. \n\n\n\nThere is childcare available and activities for all age groups. \n\n\n\nMusic at our Sunday services draws from many sources\, ranging from traditional classical music to jazz\, folk\, world music\, klezmer\, and rock. \n\n\n\nHang around after the service to meet new people during coffee hour. \n\n\n\nLEARN MORE

SUMMARY:Observatory: Opening Reception & Conversation with the Creators
DESCRIPTION:The evening before its world premiere\, come experience Observatory in a new dimension. \n\n\n\nObservatory is an original oratorio by Music Director David Brown\, premiering at Main Line Unitarian Church’s annual Music Sunday service on June 7. A large-scale work for choir\, vocal soloists\, and full orchestra\, it brings together Brown’s music\, poetry by Cameron Martin\, and deep-space astrophotography by Dave Hockenberry—a collaborative work that reaches beyond the walls of the sanctuary toward stars\, deep time\, and the questions we ask when we look up. \n\n\n\nThe multimedia exhibit at the Fireside Gallery—running May 15 through July 12—brings that collaboration into visual form\, featuring Hockenberry’s photographs of nebulae and star clusters\, Martin’s poetry\, paintings\, photographs\, and collages by the MLUC Art Group\, NASA posters\, and contributions by Yassara Antar. \n\n\n\nAt 8:00 p.m.\, Brown\, Martin\, and Hockenberry gather in the Main Meeting Room to talk about the creative process—how photographs of deep space became poems\, and how those poems became an oratorio. \n\n\n\n6:30 p.m. — Opening Reception\, Fireside Gallery 8:00 p.m. — Conversation with the Creators\, Main Meeting Room \n\n\n\nFree and Open to the Public

SUMMARY:Lecture Lunch
DESCRIPTION:This Month’s Speaker: Music Director David BrownLecture: Composing the Cosmos \n\n\n\nMusic Director David Brown offers an inside look at Observatory\, the original oratorio premiering on Music Sunday\, on June 7. He’ll also read Martin’s lyrical poetry and show Hockenberry’s stunning astronomical images. \n\n\n\nAbout Lecture Lunch \n\n\n\nLecture Lunches are held on the second Wednesday each month from September through June. They feature a guest speaker drawn from the church or outside community. There is a $10 charge to cover food costs. A vegetarian option is available. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n CLICK HERE TO RSVP
