Interfaith Hospitality Network MLUC Hosting Schedule
IHN Main Line
Main Line Unitarian Church is one of a group of churches and synagogues in the Delaware Valley that provide dinners and housing for homeless families, one week at a time, four or five times each year.
While they are in the network, families receive training and social work support so that they can find affordable housing, jobs, training, and whatever else they need to return to self-sufficiency.
Thanks to the Interfaith Hospitality Network, they always have a place to stay and food to eat while they are doing this and their children continue to go to school.
While they are staying with us, families usually arrive each evening at dinner time. Church members and their families make and serve dinners, spend time in the early evening with our visitors, or stay overnight at the church to be available in case of an emergency.
There are other roles for volunteers to fill, such as meal coordinator, shopper, set up and clean up, and laundry. At the end of each hosting week, we hold a pot luck dinner for all those volunteers who have helped. A volunteer typically contributes one two-hour shift or one overnight shift during a hosting week and it is easy to schedule these well in advance.
Periodically, they set up an information table in the church Atrium on Sunday mornings with job descriptions and sign up sheets. You can also find IHN news on the Social Action Bulletin Board to the right of the McGinness Room door.
Before you can volunteer to spend time with the families that we host, you should take a short orientation provided by IHN. Volunteer orientations are held on the second Saturday morning of the month. This is a 90-minute workshop explaining the Interfaith Hospitality Network program.
